A meme is an idea that spreads through people, which eventually becomes a trope. For example if someone started wearing a particular clothing then another person started wearing the same e.t.c.
Trope:
A trope is a recurring convention. For example a particular type of music.
Hip hop/rap:
Rap music originated in the 1970s in the South Bronx area of New York. Being the new music on the scene, rap was recorded by small, independently owned record labels. it was created by Keith Cowboy and carried on by other artists such as DJ Hollywood. It is now very popular and is produced around the world, the current artists that have carried it on are Eminem, P . Diddy 50
Cent e.t.c.
- Usually sexual
- Often wear a lot of jewelry
- Most artists have a lot of tattoos
- Will often collaborate with other artists
- Always appear like there from a rough background
- Lyrics often tell their life story


MC Hammer became one of the most successful rappers of the early nineties and one of the first household names in the genre. The album raised rap music to a new level of popularity.
Heavy metal :
Heavy metal music is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960's and early 1970's
- Very aggressive and angry
- Wear chain and leather
- Most artists wear face pain
- Have a lot of tattoos
- Usually symbolize dark music
- Usually sing about something they are passionate about
- Artists usually in bands

Pop:
Pop music is a genre of popular music which originated in the 1950's
- Fashionable dress sense
- Artists are usually attractive
- Idolized by the younger generation
- Artists normally appear perfect
- Music video is very professional
- Lyrics often tell a story
- Mostly for girls
- Normally about love

If you're looking at doing a hip hop magazine, maybe link in the Beastie Boys, VW car badges, memes and tropes. It'll help you out!
ReplyDeleteWatch out for making huge generalisations - you talk well of Hammer, but also say hip hop artists have lots of tattoos... Not sure Hammer does.
Nor did Chuck D. Also - with rap, you'd do well to link in the Gangsta genre (more synonymous with tatts) and inter-rapper violence.
Think about the murders of high-profile artists which are linked to gang culture in America.
How you you show that in your mag (if that's what you're after?)
Remember - the design is not only about liking the music. You've got to investigate the connotations behind the images.
